Physicians

Our group is comprised of four urologists with general urological and subspeciality training. All are certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. We can offer the full spectrum of urological care through our offices and the hospitals with which we are affiliated.

What so urologists do? Urologists are surgeons who specialize in the medical and surgical management of conditions affecting the urinary tracts of males and females, and the reproductive tracts of males. Following 4 years of medical school, urologists train for a minimum of 5 additional years to specialize in surgery of the urinary system. Certification is through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Some of our physicians have additional sub-specialty training beyond the standard 5 years of specialty training. Urologists are specially trained in surgery of the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, bladder, prostate, urethra and male reproductive organs. A significant portion of the specialty of urology, however, is the medical management of conditions as many conditions do not require surgery.  Urologists offer coordinated care of cancers involving the urinary system with radiation and medical oncologists.

We treat a broad variety of conditions including:

• Kidney stones

• Complex urinary tract infections

• Problems with urination including incontinence in males and females, BPH, neurological conditions affecting the bladder

• Pelvic prolapse in females

• Cancers of the urinary tract including prostate, kidney, bladder, testis and penile cancers - sometimes in conjunction with medical and radiation oncologists

• Male infertility and hormone deficiency

• Erectile dysfunction

• Congenital abnormalities of the urinary tract

We offer specialized services including

• Minimally invasive (laparoscopic) kidney surgery - partial and radical nephrectomy, pyeloplasty

• Minimally invasive (laparoscopic) prostate surgery - laparoscopic radical nephrectomy

• Advanced prostate cancer removal with potency preserving nerve sparing

• Advanced bladder cancer removal with potency preserving nerve sparing and bladder reconstruction

• Laser and shock wave (ESWL) therapy for stones

• Reconstruction of the urinary tract: urethral reconstruction, complex pelvic prolapse, neobladder formation and urinary diversion

• Surgical reconstruction of the male reproductive tract (including vasectomy reversal) and sperm acquisition

Question: What is the difference between a urologist and a nephrologist?

Answer: Nephrologists are medical specialists who treat conditions affecting the function of the kidneys - essentially the filtration and concentrating mechanisms of the kidney and hormonal functions of the kidney. Nephrologists do not perform surgery on the urinary tract. There is some overlap between the specialties as problems associated with drainage (managed by urologists) can affect problems with the filtration system of the kidney (managed by nephrologists).
